Following are some ideas for crafty play in your environment.  If you have ideas you would like to share, please contact your Coordination Unit so they can be placed on the website.

Have fun!

Outdoor Craft

  • Blow bubbles, big and small.  See our Crafty Recipe ideas for bubble recipes.
  • Water painting - use brushes and plain water to paint amazing pictures on concrete, bricks or fences. 
  • Spray water painting.  Same concept except with spray bottles - great for those hot summer days!
  • Large boxes - pile them up and knock them over.  Join them together to make tunnels or build cities.  Paint them in rainbow colours.  Use them as cars, traing, boats or plains.

Drawing

  • use textas, crayons, oil pastels, chalk, charcoal, and pencils
  • draw on paper, coloured paper, cardboard, boxes, paper plates, canvases
  • use your body to make shapes
  • make rubbings using leaves, textured surfaces, coins, material
  • write letters and post them off
  • make shopping lists - draw pictures instead of using words

Scissors

  • paper, paste, straws, cards, playdough, folded paper
  • make collages from magazines and newspapers
  • draw around hands and feet and cut them out

Collage

  • raid the backyard for sand, rocks, leaves, flowers
  • cut up old cards, magazines, wrapping paper, wallpaper
  • streamers, confetti, celophane
  • paper patty pans, cotton balls, felt, material, bottle tops, paper doilies

Painting

  • on paper, cardboards, posters, newspaper, magazines
  • egg cartons, wood, rock, shells, bark
  • mix paint with water, add glitter, shaving cream, or sand
  • experiment with mixing colours or use only black and white or single colour
  • use fly swatters, sponges, hands and feet, potato masher, cotton reels, cotton balls or buds for different effects.
  • use old toys, roll cars and make tracks, stamp with dolls feet or animal feet
  • thin paint and use spray bottles or eye droppers
  • old empty deodorant containers for rolling
  • string or wool can be dipped and dragged
  • straws can blow paint across surfaces
  • layer paint in a tray and marble then lay paper over top
  • lay paper on textured surfaces or obejcts and roll paint over top
  • draw with candles or crayons, then paint over with a water-thinned layer
  • blob paint on paper then fold and press for pretty patterns

Ideas for Older Children

  • make puppets from socks, gloves, stockings, paper plates and sticks or paper bags, then build a stage for the greatest show on earth!
  • make masks from paper plates, paper bags or papier mache.  Paint and decorate
  • make kites from straws, string and crepe paper or celophane
  • make a mobile - use toys, items from the garden, kitchenware or cutouts
  • thread beads, cotton reels, pasta, buttons
  • make hats from cardboard, paper or stockings stuffed with paper
